Beautiful Spaces, Unforgettable Stories

An in-law apartment overlooking the garden previously lacked charm, storage, and defined zones—until Jenna Gross of Colordrunk Designs entered the scene. Unapologetically embracing bright hues, she turned the abandoned abode into a punchy pink hideaway for this year’s Whole Home. “The windows, the arched doors—it was all so pretty with so much potential,” Gross says. But the neglected place “was screaming for some love.”

She started showering the space with affection by framing the three sets of French doors overlooking the gardens and pool in boldly patterned draperies. Their overscaled, pigment-rich floral design with hits of coral, grassy greens, and tropical blues set the multihued palette for the apartment. From there, Gross designated distinct zones in each room, much like you’d find in a larger home, using custom rugs to create room “breaks” and orchid pink metal dividers to separate private and utilitarian spaces. “It’s now a happy place with room for everything—and all their friends,” Gross says.

I’m a big believer that colors and patterns elevate and energize you.

Making the most of the architectural features in the home’s studio apartment, Gross added bold colors, plush fabrics, and easy-living upgrades to show this space in a whole new light.

Perfectly positioned in front of the fireplace, this hangout spot can seat a gaggle of friends on swivel chairs or ottomans that double as stools.

The apartment’s formerly beige, storage-less kitchen was completely overhauled with custom cabinetry by Trim Tech Designs painted a soft pink with Tailor Tack by Farrow & Ball and backed in a yellow stripe wallpaper by Fabricut.

Mounted metal dividers by Architectural Grille create zones and tie into the lattice skylights.

A custom pedestal table by Aronson Woodworks does triple duty as a card table, home office, and spot for meals. The four velvet swivel chairs by Coley Home are backed with fabric from Fabricut and easily tuck under the table when not in use.

Gross designed a dreamy custom canopy for the four-poster Serena & Lily bed, with curtains lined in Sasha Bikoff’s Favorite Things fabric by Vervain, featuring illustrations of croissants, pineapples, and other fun finds.

The colorful wallpaper from Morris & Co. adds another layer of vibrancy, and white bedding with a yellow embroidered edge from Sullivan & Phenix balances the room.

Off the bedroom, a small hallway channels the garden via Morris & Co. wallpaper featuring roses and birds. The floor is painted in Farrow & Ball’s Nancy’s Blushes with added details in Rangwali.

An adorned walk-in closet designed by California Closets completes the apartment suite.

To the side of the kitchen, a large-scale-print Stroheim wallpaper brings beauty to function in the apartment’s laundry space.

The washer/dryer combo by GE Profile doesn’t need to be vented to the exterior, making it easy to install in a closet (or anywhere there’s an electrical outlet).
