Whole Home 2019 Music Room and Black Bathroom Photos
“We’re in Music City!” says designer Monet Masters of Atlanta-based Forbes + Masters, “What better way to use a bonus room than to turn it into a listening lounge? And since it’s tucked away from the rest of the house, you can really jam out!” With the overwhelming task of taking on the music room in Nashville, the capital of live music, they jumped right in without hesitation—and soon decided the best way to make a statement was to eschew the traditional lounge aesthetic (dark and moody) in favor of a light, bright space with serious flavor.
Business partner Tavia Forbes is no stranger to music, noting that with her DJ boyfriend of over seven years, she’s often in record stores for hours while he’s picking up vinyls to add to his massive collection. To create the mood they wanted—a ’60s and ’70s Hendrix vibe—they chose furnishings that represented a mix of styles and eras, layering the floor with a modern shag carpet and using two different wallcoverings on the ceiling and wall. “The ceiling paper felt a little trippy, which we thought was definitely the feel. And the suede-like walls reminded us of speakers,” says Forbes.
To house more than a thousand vinyls, Forbes, her father, and the duo’s former SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) professor joined forces to create a two-tiered wood storage unit that could display the collection.”It took a bit of engineering, because the openings had to perfectly fit the size of the records,” says Forbes. After sketching out a design, they played with a mix of finishes, finally landing on one that complemented the gray-brown floors and worked with the overall space. Custom inserts from Architectural Grille keep the collection from tipping over and give breathing room to the massive storage piece.
Most of the furniture came from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, but this design duo was determined to make sure the pieces felt eclectic and collected over time. Working with the vast selection of fabrics they offer, they chose an unexpected mix of leather, textured chenille, sherpa, and even an oversized herringbone pattern to get this effect. A 96-inch sofa anchors the room, creating a perfect spot for writing out tunes, Nashville-style, or just relaxing listening to music. While additional chairs (three of which swivel!) offer more seating for kicking back, and if you need even more room to sprawl out, the uber-cozy shag rug from Stark is so comfy, you won’t think twice about lounging on the floor.
Just down the hall, lead designer of Castle Homes, Joy Huber, took cues from the music room, creating a contrasting palette that’s “artful, funky, and fun,” for the adjoining bathroom. She used large-format marble tiles on the shower surround from The Tile Shop—which is a less-expensive option than doing a full surround of marble or quartz. This dark space is complemented by a black toilet by Kohler, enhancing that rocker vibe.
